Once you have developed your website on the local drive of your computer you will publish your site to a host. In other words, you will create an exact copy of your website on the root of the web hosting server. Once you publish your website to a host, it will be accessible to the world via a URL address. Most hosting solutions, such as www.godaddy.com , require a monthly charge. However there are a handful of free hosting solutions to choose from.
UNH offers a free solution on its own server. Any UNH student can configure an account as long as they have an active user id. You will notice that this website is hosted by UNH. The domain in the URL is http://admn410.unh.edu/
Your website URL will include the domain + "/~" + your username
For example: admn410.unh.edu/~ab123
You may also choose to host your website with a non-UNH domain so you can maintain control of the site after you graduate. One (somewhat) reliable free solution is an Italian based host called altervista.
Host your website with UNH (recommended)
The initial setup is simple and well documented.
Download and install FileZilla FTP Client Filezilla
Install the FileZilla Client (PC or Mac)
Follow the instructions in the file below. If you are not on campus, you will need to install the GlobalProtect VPN provided by UNH.
Once you have installed FileZilla, do the following:
Double-click the FileZilla icon on you desktop
Choose File>Site Manager
Click the "New Site" button
Rename the site from "New SIte" to "UNHServer" (or any other intuitive name)
Create a new profile as demonstrated below:
If you are prompted witham "Unknown host key" dialog box, check "Always trust this host" and then click OK
Your connection to the web server may time out. It is sometimes necessary to close FileZilla and restart to properly reconnect.
Show File Extensions
It is much easier to manage files if you are able to see the file extensions. All image files have an extension such as .jpg, .gif, .png, etc. Many of your laptops do not display these extensions by default. I suggest following the directions below:
